An online meeting took place between the UCCRO and the World Council of Churches

On April 20, 2026, an online meeting was held between the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) and representatives of the World Council of Churches (WCC). The meeting was co-chaired by WCC General Secretary Rev. Dr. Jerry Pillay and the Chairman of UCCRO, Bishop of the Trans-Carpathian Reformed Church, Oleksandr Zan-Fabian.

The Ukrainian side expressed gratitude to the World Council of Churches for its support of Ukraine in the war for independence and for its prayers for the Ukrainian people. Representatives of UCCRO informed the WCC about new cases of religious persecution in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the seizure of a Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church building in the Zaporizhzhia region by the Russian occupying authorities, as well as other instances of persecution. They also described as unacceptable the position of the Russian Orthodox Church in supporting the aggressive war against Ukraine and the genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Participants in the meeting emphasized the importance of direct communication between the World Council of Churches and Ukrainian churches and religious organizations to ensure accurate information about the situation in Ukraine, with a focus on religious life, church activities during the war, and support for people.

The parties discussed practical aspects of a possible solidarity visit by a World Council of Churches delegation to Ukraine and agreed to hold a global prayer for a just peace in Ukraine with the joint participation of the WCC and UCCRO.

It should be recalled that in May 2023, a delegation of the World Council of Churches visited Ukraine and met with the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations.
